Thesis StatementNBIL amplifies the Nebius thesis 2x daily for outsized upside on a name already believed in, in exchange for real daily-reset decay risk.
Leveraged exposure, currently within policy cap
My Investment Policy Statement caps the leveraged sleeve at 5% of invested capital. NBIL is 2.78%, comfortably under that cap. I also hold NBIS outright at 1.22% — policy counts leveraged-plus-underlying as concentrated single-name risk, so my real Nebius exposure is somewhat larger than either line suggests on its own, even though neither line is currently in breach. Full writeup in the July letter.
Core Thesis
NBIL is a 2x daily-reset leveraged ETF on NBIS; its return case rides entirely on Nebius's own compounding, amplified — I added it for outsized upside on a name I already believed in, and the return has been extraordinary, up nearly 250%, precisely because...

Bear Case
NBIS goes through a choppy, volatile stretch — even one that's roughly flat over time — and daily-reset decay compounds losses on both the leveraged position and the double-exposure to NBIS itself.
Investment Thesis
- The Thesis
- NBIL is a 2x daily-reset leveraged ETF on NBIS; its return case rides entirely on Nebius's own compounding, amplified — I added it for outsized upside on a name I already believed in, and the return has been extraordinary, up nearly 250%, precisely because it's 2x daily leverage on one of my best-performing holdings.
- The Catalyst
- Continued low-volatility upward trending in NBIS itself — that's the specific condition under which daily-reset leverage compounds favorably rather than decaying, so the catalyst here is really just "NBIS keeps doing what it's been doing."
- The Risk
- A daily-reset 2x ETF decays in choppy, sideways markets even when the underlying is flat over time — a structurally bad long-term hold no matter how the NBIS thesis itself plays out, which is exactly why I've kept it capped under my 5% leveraged-sleeve limit (currently 2.78%).
- The Connection
- Part of my AI-infrastructure/compute theme as a leveraged wrapper on NBIS — the riskiest, most amplified expression of that theme in the book.
Pre-Mortem Thesis Invalidation Parameters
Codified in advance, before any of these have happened, so a future decision to hold or exit isn't rationalized in the moment. If a condition below is met, the thesis as written is invalidated and the position gets re-underwritten from scratch — not automatically sold, but automatically questioned.
| Metric / Event | Automatic Review Trigger |
|---|---|
| Leveraged-Sleeve Cap | Position exceeds my 5% leveraged-sleeve limit (currently 2.78%) without a rebalancing trim. |
| Underlying NBIS Thesis | Any NBIS-specific trigger below fires — NBIL's return case rides entirely on NBIS, amplified. |
| Structure | 2x daily-reset leveraged ETF on NBIS (Nebius Group) |

Valuation Logic
There is no independent valuation logic for NBIL beyond NBIS's own — see the NBIS position page and the NBIS Q1 2026 earnings report; the leverage mechanism itself is the entire incremental risk/reward relative to holding NBIS outright.
Why I own it, and the risk it still carries
I added this for amplified upside on a name I already believed in. The return has been extraordinary — up nearly 250% — precisely because it's 2x leverage on one of my best-performing holdings. A recent pullback has actually brought it back under the leveraged-sleeve cap, but the underlying risk hasn't changed: a daily-reset 2x ETF decays in choppy, sideways markets even when the underlying is flat over time, which makes it a bad long-term hold no matter how the thesis on NBIS plays out.
Risk/Reward Profile
| Bull Case | Bear Case |
|---|---|
| NBIS keeps compounding on strong, low-volatility trends (where daily-reset decay is minimal), and I keep this comfortably under the 5% cap even as the position recovers. | NBIS goes through a choppy, volatile stretch — even one that's roughly flat over time — and daily-reset decay compounds losses on both the leveraged position and the double-exposure to NBIS itself. |
