September 2026 · Interim Note

The Book Gained Just $22.33 Today. Meta Was Worth $186.18 of It

September 9, 2026 · Not a full monthly letter — a short check-in between them

A hand writing in an open notebook next to a cup of coffee and a vase of dried flowers on a wooden desk
The number in the ledger barely moved today. Almost nothing about how it got there was quiet.

The book closed at $34,135.02 today, up just $22.33 from yesterday — a quiet number that hides a loud day underneath it. Meta alone was worth $186.18 of the move after the stock rose 6.55% on the launch of its new Muse AI agent and news of an $18 billion legal settlement, covered in full in today’s News piece. Vertiv took back $83.82 of it on a 9.61% drop I cannot explain from any dated news source, and Estée Lauder (−$52.56), SpaceX (−$47.36) and Cheesecake Factory (−$28.80) chipped away at the rest. AMD, Micron, SanDisk and Datadog all added real money too. No trades.

This is close to the mirror image of the memory-chip day five sessions ago, when five names moved together on one story. Today there were really two separate stories occupying the same session: Meta's, which had two independent, dated sources behind it, and Vertiv's, which as far as I can tell from the news I checked had none at all. Today’s Opinion piece goes further into what it means that the market can move a position 9.61% with no traceable cause.

The position that took the day's gain back down to almost nothing

Vertiv (VRT) daily close vs. SPY, indexed, last 49 trading sessions through September 9, 2026. Source: Massive Market Data.

Vertiv is now my only double-digit percentage loser against cost: down 13.78% against my $304.90 average cost on 3 shares, a position worth $788.67 at today's close. The only same-day coverage I could find — a Zacks piece — didn't report a catalyst; it reported that Vertiv "maintains a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) with strong projected earnings growth of 47.58% and revenue growth of 40.27% for the upcoming quarter" against a "Forward P/E of 43.49 versus its industry average of 13.49." Those are real, dated numbers, and they point in the opposite direction of today's price action — a genuine tension between what one analyst says about the business and what the market did to the stock. The table below sizes my own position under a few illustrative combinations of that growth estimate and that multiple.

If Vertiv's EPS and multiple move to…Implied priceMy 3-share position valueGain vs. my $304.90 cost
$262.89 (today's close, unchanged)$262.89$788.67−13.78%
EPS +47.58% (Zacks' quarterly estimate), multiple unchanged at 43.49x$387.97$1,163.92+27.25%
Multiple compresses to Vertiv's 13.49x industry average, EPS unchanged$81.54$244.63−73.26%
EPS +47.58% and multiple compresses to 13.49x$120.34$361.03−60.53%

Assumptions, stated plainly. This table backs into an implied current forward EPS of $6.04 by dividing today's $262.89 close by Vertiv's reported 43.49x forward P/E, then applies Zacks' 47.58% projected earnings-growth figure and 13.49x industry-average multiple, both from the same September 9, 2026 Zacks coverage, in isolation and in combination. Zacks reported that growth figure for "the upcoming quarter," not a full year — applying it here as if it were an annual growth rate is a simplification I'm making explicitly, not something Zacks itself claimed. This is not a DCF, not a price target, and not my own forecast; it exists to show how sensitive a rich multiple is to two real, sourced numbers pulling in opposite directions.

No trades today

Vertiv is now my only holding underwater against cost, and the Blackout Rule and Holding Period exist for exactly this kind of session: a 9.61% move with no news I can point to is not new information about the business until I actually have some. I've relied on the same Zacks and Motley Fool coverage cited in today's News and Opinion pieces, and none of it named a reason for today specifically. I made no trades.
