Alphabet Just Borrowed $25 Billion — the Debt-Funded Phase of AI Capex I Flagged in July Is Now a Filed Bond
On Friday, Alphabet closed a $25 billion debt offering across maturities running from 2028 to 2066, including a $2.5 billion tranche not due for forty years, priced at 6.5% interest. That is a large, dated, disclosed corporate-finance event, not a rumor or a retrospective narrative — and it is the single clearest piece of evidence I've seen yet that the AI-infrastructure buildout has moved into a phase I wrote about, but hadn't seen confirmed, back in July.
What the July research actually found
In my July 17 Opinion piece, written the same day TSMC raised its 2026 capex guidance and IBM had its worst single-day decline since 1987, I asked whether AI infrastructure spending was still self-funding or starting to strain. I didn't answer that question in the piece itself — I built The AI Capex Reality Check two days later, pulling Alphabet's own Q1 2026 SEC filings and putting a real number on the gap: Alphabet generated $0.28 of free cash flow for every $1 of that quarter's capital expenditure. Not close to self-funding. Meta generated $0.65, also short.
That was a snapshot of one quarter's cash-flow statement. It told me the company wasn't currently funding its buildout entirely from operations, but it didn't tell me what Alphabet would actually do about the gap — draw down cash, slow capex, or borrow. Friday's bond answers that question directly, and with real numbers behind it: per Friday's reporting, Alphabet's capex reached $80.6 billion in the first half of 2026, more than double the $39.6 billion spent in the same period of 2025, and the company's long-term debt has risen from $46.5 billion at the start of the year to $123 billion after this offering.
Why a 2066 maturity is the detail that matters
Borrowing to fund growth capex isn't inherently alarming — it's a completely normal way to finance a large asset build-out, and by the numbers I have, Alphabet's interest burden remains small relative to its cash generation ($446 billion in annual revenue, roughly $85 billion of first-half cash generation). What I find genuinely notable is the maturity structure: a $2.5 billion piece of this debt won't come due until 2066. That's a company financing AI infrastructure on a multi-decade horizon, which is either a sign of real confidence in the durability of that infrastructure's economic life, or a sign that the payback period for this capex cycle is now being underwritten in decades rather than years. Both readings are consistent with the same underlying fact: the gap between AI capex and AI-generated free cash flow, which I measured directly in July, is now being bridged with long-dated debt rather than closing on its own.
