Treasury Yields Hit Their Highest Level Since 2007 Ahead of the Fed. Chip Stocks Rallied Anyway, and Coinbase Fell 10.10% on a Senate Vote
The S&P 500 (SPY) fell 0.46% to $757.39 Tuesday, the Nasdaq-100 (QQQ) fell 0.65% and the Dow (DIA) fell 0.62%, as the 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.04% — its highest level since July 2007 — on the first day of the Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting, per The Motley Fool's Anders Bylund. Crude oil (USO) rose 3.32% to $161.86 on a reported pipeline disruption in Saudi Arabia, the same coverage noted, which lifted Chevron 2.26% on the session. Underneath the index-level decline, the chip and AI-infrastructure names that sold off Monday on public calls from Anthropic, OpenAI and xAI leadership to slow AI development mostly reversed higher instead: AMD rose 2.19% to $504.20, CrowdStrike rose 3.02% to $242.49, and Nvidia, Micron, Arm and Marvell all closed higher. Coinbase (COIN) was the session's sharpest decliner among tickers this site tracks, falling 10.10% to $172.11 ahead of a Senate vote on cryptocurrency-market-structure legislation, per an earlier Motley Fool report.

Story one: yields hit an 18-year high the day before the Fed's decision
The 10-year Treasury yield's move to 5.04% Tuesday — described by The Motley Fool as "the highest since July 2007" — came as the Fed's Federal Open Market Committee opened its two-day meeting, with a decision due Wednesday at 2 p.m. Eastern and a press conference to follow. The same coverage reported the Fed is "expected to hike rates by a quarter-point," a shift from earlier in the week, when minutes from the Fed's July meeting (cited in this site's midday report) showed the committee had held its target range at 3.50%–3.75% with only three of its voting members preferring an increase. Oil's 3.32% rise added to the pressure on rate-sensitive assets: financial stocks were the session's weakest sector, with Goldman Sachs falling 2.9% and dragging the Dow more than any other single name, per the same Fool report. Elsewhere in coverage-list names, Amazon fell 2.02% on reported disruption to its cloud-computing capacity in Bahrain and the UAE tied to the Iran conflict, and Apple fell 0.52% amid a reported regulatory review of its software-warranty policy in India — both, per the same article, distinct from the day's rate-and-oil story.

Story two: the names Monday's AI-slowdown headlines hit hardest mostly rallied back
Monday, public comments from Anthropic, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, and other AI leaders calling for a slower, more safety-conscious pace of AI development sent chip and AI-infrastructure names lower, as covered in this site's September 14 piece. Tuesday, most of those same names reversed higher: AMD gained 2.19% to $504.20, Nvidia gained 0.57%, Micron gained 0.39%, Arm gained 1.18%, Marvell gained 1.32% and CrowdStrike gained 3.02% to $242.49, with Intel roughly flat at −0.05%. The Motley Fool's Anders Bylund reported the recovery directly, writing that "chip stocks recovered today" even as the major indexes fell on the yield and oil story above. Zacks Investment Research separately reported that AMD's data-center sales rose 107% year-over-year, and that the company's Helios AI platform and EPYC server CPUs, alongside partnerships with OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic, support current Zacks consensus estimates of 58.33% EPS growth and 41.3% revenue growth for the coming quarter, and 79.38% full-year EPS growth and 45.79% full-year revenue growth for 2026 — against a forward P/E of 65.97, more than triple the industry average of 20.72. A separate Fool piece the same day had flagged AMD and CrowdStrike specifically as the two stocks most exposed if the AI-development-pace warning proved out, citing AMD's "P/E ratio of 89.5" and CrowdStrike's "sky-high P/S ratio of 39.4" — a tension the September 14 Opinion piece already flagged: a warning about pace is not, by itself, evidence of a demand cut, and Tuesday's price action didn't behave as if one had occurred.

| If AMD's full-year EPS compounds at… | After Year 1 | After Year 2 | After Year 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40% annually | 1.40× | 1.96× | 2.74× |
| 60% annually | 1.60× | 2.56× | 4.10× |
| 79.38% annually (Zacks' current FY2026 estimate) | 1.79× | 3.22× | 5.77× |
| 100% annually | 2.00× | 4.00× | 8.00× |
Assumptions, stated plainly. Only the 79.38% figure is sourced — Zacks Investment Research's current consensus estimate for AMD's full-year 2026 EPS growth, published September 15, 2026, alongside a 58.33% estimate for the coming quarter and a forward P/E of 65.97 against a 20.72 industry average. The 40%, 60% and 100% rows are illustrative brackets around that number, not alternative analyst estimates. This is pure compounding arithmetic on one consensus growth rate, applied to an index of 1.0x today; it assumes the rate holds for three consecutive years, ignores AMD's own elevated valuation, the PEG ratio of 4.4 Zacks also reported (against a 0.59 industry average), and the explicit risk the same day's other coverage raised — that a genuine slowdown in AI development could reduce demand for the data-center GPUs driving this growth. It is not an AMD price target and not this site's own forecast.
Story three: Coinbase fell on a vote most of the book didn't feel; two names moved with no explanation at all
Coinbase (COIN) fell 10.10% to $172.11, extending a decline The Motley Fool's Emma Newbery had already flagged at midday — down 6.03% by late morning — "ahead of Senate legislation votes" on cryptocurrency market structure; Robinhood fell alongside it on the same story. Tempus AI (TEM) moved the opposite direction by a similar magnitude, rising 10.67% to $68.85 with no dated news identified explaining the move in the sources checked for this piece. Cheesecake Factory (CAKE) fell 8.03% to $96.73, also with no dated news found. Both are described here as unexplained moves rather than assigned a cause this site can't verify. Elsewhere among covered tickers, Applied Digital (APLD) fell 4.72%, Oracle (ORCL) fell 3.07%, and SpaceX and Netflix, both AEA holdings, fell 3.15% and 3.01% respectively — none with a same-day catalyst found.
