Semiconductors Rose While the Dow Fell. The Security Complex Broke.

A 0.84% index decline covering a rotation, not a selloff: memory and semis were bought, security software was sold, and the two groups share a sector label and essentially nothing else.

S&P 500 $762.60 −0.84%
Nasdaq-100 $710.93 −0.72%
Semis $562.65 +0.31%
Russell 2000 $297.67 −1.34%
Silver $61.66 +2.75%
Crude $134.54 +2.77%

Thursday looked like a broad down day and was not one. The S&P 500 fell 0.84%, the Dow fell 1.27% and small caps fell 1.34% — while semiconductors rose 0.31%. Underneath, the market bought memory and sold security software, two groups that have almost nothing to do with each other except that both are usually described as “tech.”

01A falling index with a rising semiconductor complex

The index numbers say risk came off. The sector numbers say something narrower happened. Semiconductors closed higher on a day when the Dow lost 1.27% and the Russell 2000 lost 1.34%, which is not a combination you get from indiscriminate selling. Money moved between groups rather than out of the market.

Reading this figure
  1. The cluster near zero is why the index barely moved.
  2. Right tail: Tempus AI +8.82%, Coinbase +7.58%, Marvell +5.79%.
  3. Left tail: CrowdStrike −5.60%, IonQ −4.22%, SpaceX −4.05%.
  4. Neither tail is an index story. Both are group stories.

02Why memory and security moved opposite ways

These two groups get bundled together in the phrase “technology,” and Thursday is a clean demonstration that the label carries almost no information. They earn money in structurally different ways, and the session repriced exactly that difference.

  1. Memory sells a commodity into a shortage

Micron and SanDisk price per bit against physical supply. When the market believes supply stays tight, the revenue line moves without the cost line following it — which is the whole finding in SanDisk’s fiscal 2026 filing: revenue up 175%, volume up mid-teens percent.

    Aug 20: MU +3.97%, SNDK +2.02%
  2. Security software sells a subscription into a budget

CrowdStrike and Palo Alto grow by winning a larger share of an IT budget that is set annually. That revenue is more predictable and much longer-duration — most of its value is renewals years out.

    Aug 20: CRWD −5.60%, PANW −2.84%
  3. A rate move hits the two very differently

Long-duration subscription revenue is discounted harder when yields rise. A commodity shortage is priced on today’s spot economics and barely notices. Same nominal sector, opposite rate sensitivity.

  4. So a single session can buy one and sell the other

Which is what Thursday did, and it is why I hold both deliberately rather than treating the pair as one allocation.

Silver rose 2.75% and crude rose 2.77% while long Treasuries fell 0.82% — a combination that reads as an inflation impulse rather than a growth scare, and one that is consistent with the memory bid: commodity-like pricing power is worth more when input prices are rising, not less.
