Enterprise Software Slides as AI-Debt Worries Resurface — SpaceX Falls Again, Super Micro Jumps 19.8%

July 22, 2026 · Indices, ServiceNow (NOW), SpaceX (SPCX), Super Micro Computer (SMCI)

U.S. equities were little changed on the index level Wednesday, July 22, but that calm masked sharp dispersion underneath. The S&P 500 (SPY) slipped 0.12% to $747.41, the Nasdaq-100 (QQQ) fell 0.51% to $705.35, and the Dow (DIA) was effectively flat at $521.47. Crude oil (USO) rose 2.20% as prices pushed above $86 a barrel on Middle East tensions, while gold (GLD) gained 1.15% and silver (SLV) rose 1.58% in a mild flight to safety.

The session's overhang, per Motley Fool's midday market wrap, was a Goldman Sachs report tallying $489 billion in AI-related debt issuance so far this year, with hyperscalers accounting for roughly 40% of it — a reminder that a growing share of the AI buildout is being financed with borrowed money, not just cash flow. That overhang hit high-multiple enterprise-software names hardest: ServiceNow fell 6.47% to $95.46, Datadog fell 3.54% to $245.77, Palo Alto Networks fell 2.01% to $335.28, and Fortinet fell 1.93% to $155.05. Salesforce (not an AEA holding) fell 4.15%, Palantir fell 6.10%, and Coinbase fell 5.53%. Investors were also bracing for Alphabet and Tesla earnings after Wednesday's close.

SpaceX fell 6.70% to $115.26, a fourth distinct down day in two weeks, as several same-day analyst pieces focused on the mechanics of its upcoming share lockup: roughly 911 million pre-IPO shares begin becoming eligible for sale in August, potentially doubling the stock's public float, while Morgan Stanley estimated the company will need on the order of $700 billion in external capital through 2034 and won't generate positive free cash flow until 2035. The stock is now roughly 49% below its post-IPO peak and trades below its $135 IPO price.

Elsewhere on the tape

Super Micro Computer was the day's biggest mover, up 19.84% to $30.56, after telling investors it expects 2026 gross margins to roughly double on strong AI-infrastructure demand. Hardware and power names tied to the same AI buildout were broadly higher even as software names fell: CoreWeave rose 3.85%, Talen Energy rose 3.08%, Vistra rose 2.72%, and Broadcom rose 2.67%.
