Vistra gave investors a range for next year’s adjusted EBITDA. I want that number beside the bill for expanding the generation fleet. Closing the Cogentrix acquisition brought about 5,500 megawatts of gas-fired capacity into the portfolio, according to Vistra. More capacity can mean more operating earnings, but a larger business is not by itself evidence of a better return on the capital used to buy it. I would rather start with what the assets must earn than work backwards from Friday’s share-price gain.
Management expects $4.3 billion to $5.1 billion in adjusted free cash flow before growth for 2027. The final two words matter: cash before growth investment is not necessarily cash available after the company funds the projects behind its growth story. Nor is the difference between the EBITDA and cash-flow midpoints a measure of interest alone. I would use the company’s reconciliations to separate interest, taxes and maintenance spending, then model growth outlays separately.

The useful comparison is cash generated by the enlarged fleet against the capital committed to it, including the cost of financing. I would also want to know how much of that cash depends on power prices that are already hedged and how much remains exposed. An investor can believe electricity demand will grow and still be wrong about the price paid for the assets that serve it. Friday gave me a better set of figures for testing that distinction, not a verdict.
| Measure | Reported figure | Context |

| 2027 adjusted free cash flow before growth | $4.3–$5.1 billion | Company guidance; excludes growth investment |
| Cogentrix capacity added | About 5,500 MW | Company disclosure; natural-gas generation |
