When Arm reports 27% revenue growth and the shares fall the following day, I do not take the price as proof that the revenue was poor quality. I look at how it was earned. A customer signing a license says something about its design plans. A royalty on a customer’s shipped chip says something different: that a design actually made it into a product someone shipped. The two amounts can rise together without being interchangeable.
Arm said higher memory prices weighed on the smartphone market and partly offset royalty growth. That is a concrete link between an input market and a business that does not have to sell the memory itself. I would check phone shipments and royalties per chip separately. A richer design mix might help royalties per unit even if fewer units ship; a strong licensing quarter cannot resolve that volume question. Micron’s drop on Thursday does not tell me that device makers suddenly got a lower price for their memory.

Arm’s own silicon is another category. Management’s expected fiscal fourth-quarter delivery milestone is useful because it gives me a date against which to test execution. I would not value the planned shipment as though it already earned the same gross margin as an IP license. The physical product comes with a different cost base, and its cash economics need evidence of their own. My next review would ask what converted from a design commitment to a shipped unit, and what the company retained on that sale. Neither answer is in Thursday’s share price.
| Measure | Reported figure | Context |
|---|---|---|
| License and other revenue | $773 million | Reported fiscal Q2; +50% year over year |
| Royalty revenue | $670 million | Reported fiscal Q2; +8% year over year |
| AGI CPU commercial deliveries | Fiscal Q4 2027 | Company milestone; not an actual shipment |
