Intel’s report can be better than its own earlier expectations and still make a forward model less comfortable. That is precisely why I would not use the word beat as a substitute for the release. Third-quarter sales came in at $16.5 billion. The next quarter’s company forecast is $15 billion to $16 billion. The difference is not proof that the turnaround has failed; it does tell me not to extend the latest result in a straight line.
I would split the next revision into unit demand, capacity, and the costs of getting that capacity into service. A buyer willing to pay for another processor is evidence for revenue. It is not evidence that Intel can deliver enough units at the margin the model assumes. Likewise, supply expansion may be sensible and still consume cash before it lifts profit. Those are separate columns in the model.

Intel also reported completing a $23 billion equity offering. I would give the financing credit for increasing resources available to the business without treating it as operating cash generation. To judge what the turnaround is worth to shareholders, I need to model the capital raised and the resulting share count alongside the incremental profit those resources might support.
There is a real positive in the release: operating cash flow was $5.1 billion for the quarter. But that is a starting line, not cash left after every investment. I would compare it with the spending required to bring additional supply online. If the company has to commit capital now to sell more units later, the thesis depends on the gap between those dates as much as on the demand itself. The discount I put on that future cash should reflect the execution risk, not Friday’s chart alone.
My first check next quarter would be whether the weakness Intel describes in PCs offsets improvements elsewhere, not whether the stock retraces Friday’s loss. If the operating result improves while working capital and investment keep absorbing cash, I want to understand the timing before I raise my estimate of sustainable earnings. A large price move gives that question urgency; it does not answer it.
