META is a portfolio holding, so I do not get to discuss its capital spending as someone else’s problem. This quarter’s negative free cash flow matters even though the advertising business still generated substantial operating cash.
I can see the temptation to start with revenue growth, treat infrastructure as a temporary inconvenience and move on. That would make the position easier to defend. It would not make the research better. The cash commitment is part of the business I own, not a separate story I can remove when it becomes uncomfortable.
The published portfolio also includes businesses tied to the infrastructure buildout, including AMD, MU and VRT. What is a cost to a platform can become revenue for a supplier. That helps explain why I cannot use the same spending announcement as an uncomplicated positive for every name in the book.
For the platform, I need a return on installed capacity. For the supplier, I need durable customer demand and attractive economics delivering the product. If the customer eventually decides the investment is earning too little, the supplier’s order outlook can change as well. Those holdings do not become independent just because their income statements record the spending on different lines.
I want the META valuation to show the actual investment schedule, not a convenient version in which every new opportunity requires little additional capital. I also want a case in which returns take longer than management hopes. The point is to see what the current price requires, not to manufacture a bearish scenario for its own sake.
The proposed share class needs its own note. A stock dividend is not cash coming into the business, and future non-voting issuance deserves a per-share assessment. Neither fact tells me by itself to buy or sell.
The Blackout Rule and Holding Period policy remain constraints, not optional responses to an earnings headline. I am not reconstructing a trade log in this letter. I am recording the research obligation: if I own the growth, I have to account for the spending needed to produce it.
