AMD gained 3.65% in Tuesday’s regular session, as the semiconductor ETF SMH rose 2.01%. The broader tape was less uniform: SPY gained 0.30% while DIA fell 0.44%. The move in AMD preceded its 4:15 p.m. earnings release. It was not a response to the reported figures.
AMD reported third-quarter sales of $13.4 billion, up 45% from a year earlier. Data Center accounted for $8.5 billion and grew 97%, with the company pointing to EPYC processors and the MI450 GPU launch. That was not the picture across the whole business. Client and Gaming revenue fell 8%, as a decline in gaming outweighed growth in client sales. The consolidated growth rate hides that split.

Management expects roughly $17 billion of fourth-quarter revenue, with a 3% band on either side. The midpoint implies about 27% sequential growth. Its adjusted gross-margin estimate is about 55%, compared with the 56% it just reported. That does not imply lower gross profit dollars: a higher revenue base can outweigh a lower margin rate. It does mean the sales ramp and the economics of serving it need to be tested separately.
The guide gives investors two benchmarks for the Helios and Venice ramp: the sales that actually ship and the margin they produce. The quarterly report establishes that data-center growth has reached recognized revenue, rather than remaining just a customer announcement. It does not establish the costs or cash conversion of every deployment still ahead. The next report can test both claims without turning Tuesday’s pre-release rally into evidence about the quarter.
