US stocks fell Wednesday after September inflation exceeded expectations. Reuters reported a 0.3% monthly increase in core consumer prices, against a 0.2% forecast. Annual core inflation was 2.6%, while the headline rate was 3.7%.
The data revived questions about further rate increases. The dollar rose, and rate-sensitive AI names came under pressure. Reuters’ equity account identified Oracle and CoreWeave among the stocks hurt by renewed concern about borrowing costs.
The move connected a household-price release with corporate infrastructure finance. Higher inflation can make a pause less comfortable for the Fed, while higher borrowing costs can reduce the return available on capital-intensive projects even if their expected revenue is unchanged.
The report did not establish that AI demand had disappeared. It changed the financial assumptions under which that demand could be served. For investors, Wednesday’s important distinction was between a technology’s potential market and the financing terms required to build enough capacity to reach it.
