Nvidia Set a Record as the Market Turned Toward Earnings

Technology led another advance, shifting attention from the cost of capital to the profits expected to justify it.

The Nasdaq closed at a record Monday as Nvidia and Microsoft helped lift US stocks. Reuters reported that Nvidia gained 2.1% and also reached a record closing high.

The advance followed Friday’s softer employment report and came as investors prepared for third-quarter results. Oil eased, providing another source of relief after weeks in which energy and financing costs had repeatedly interrupted the technology rally.

That combination gave the market a more favorable starting point for earnings season. It did not lower the burden on companies to deliver. At record prices, investors were already paying for a meaningful amount of future success.

The next reports would need to clarify more than whether revenue grew. For AI-linked businesses, spending plans, margins and the timing of returns remained central. A supplier’s sales could look strong while a customer’s capacity to fund future purchases became more constrained. Monday’s gains put the market’s expectations on display before the operating evidence arrived.
